Dr. Andrew Berlin is a technologist and entrepreneur based in Haddonfield, New Jersey. Dr. Berlin currently serves as President of Applied Voices LLC, a corporation he founded in 2008. Applied Voices is a software development company that specializes in creating applications that blend the world of computing with people's senses in new ways.

 

Applied Voices first product, HT Professional Recorder, is a voice recorder application for the Apple iPhone. HT Professional Recorder uses speech enhancement algorithms developed by Dr. Berlin to permit a single iPhone to clearly capture human voices throughout a large room, making it ideal for recording board meetings, conference presentations, and college lectures. Applied Voices second product, uFlute, was the first 'Blow to play' musical instrument for the Apple iPhone.

 

Prior to forming Applied Voices LLC, Dr. Berlin recently took a sabbatical as a visiting scientist at Stanford Medical School, where he developed the Snooperscope, a novel type of biopsy probe for early disease detection.

 

Dr. Berlin has broad experience in sensor development and signal processing, including applications in early disease detection, biosciences, MicroElectroMechanical Systems (MEMS), computer architecture, and information technology.  Dr. Berlin founded the Biomedical and Life Sciences activities at Intel Corporation in June, 2000.  During his 6-year tenure at Intel, the R&D program developed a set of novel technologies for molecular diagnostics and early disease detection, and established collaborations with the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and several leading universities and corporations.   Prior to joining Intel, Dr. Berlin co-founded the MEMS & Smart Matter activities at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center. 

 

Dr. Berlin has previously served as chair of the Technology Advisory Board of the Canary Foundation, and as also a member of its Scientific Advisory Board.  Dr. Berlin has also served as a founding member of the board of directors of the MEMS Industry Group, as a member of the DARPA Information Science and Technology team, as a member of the National Research Council Board of Oversight of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and on numerous advisory boards in the electronics and biotechnology industries.  Dr. Berlin holds more than 50 issued U.S. patents with dozens of patent applications pending.

 

Andrew Berlin received S.B., S.M., and Ph.D. degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
